Bean and Soup

Adding Beans to Soup

Some soup recipes are enhanced with beans while others showcase the beans as the soup’s main ingredient. Beans are a great source of protein and you might find them in meat or poultry soups as well as in strictly vegetarian or vegan ones. There are plenty of beans to choose from and pinto beans, kidney beans, garbanzo beans and cannellini beans are just some of your options. Something else you can decide on is whether to use dried or canned beans to make your soup. Dried beans often need to be soaked overnight before cooking, to reduce their cooking time, while canned beans usually need to be drained and rinsed. Some recipes will give you the choice of which kind to use.

Healthy Bean-Rich Soup Recipes

Although beans are found in some creamy soups, they are often found in healthy recipes because they are a fantastic source of protein, economical to buy, and they go so well with vegetables. You might puree some or all of the soup to make it smooth but beans add a chunky texture so usually the recipe will tell you not to puree the soup, so you get the color and texture of chunky beans in the mix. Other ingredients in bean soups might be vegetables, chicken, beef or ham, and the recipe might feature peas as well as the beans. Also, you might add a variety of beans, perhaps some red, some white and some green, to make the soup look more attractive, as well as getting the different flavors from each kind of bean in there.
